Dr Westlake was a founding non-executive director of a group of startups in fibre-optics
for telecommunications.
Under the guidance of a Board of Directors, including Dr Westlake, a number of these
startups combined to form an international conglomerate with a very high growth trajectory.
A key role for the non-executive directors was to manage cash flow from limited capital,
while ensuring maximum international growth.
The group raised in excess of $250 million, from a pre-money valuation of $1 billion,
prior to having any significant revenue. As might be expected, a number of experienced
international businessmen took over the Board following the fundraising - the role
of the early stage Board had been done
